National Astronomy Week 2017 started off with the launch of the Philippine Union of Student Organizations (PUSO) for Astronomy at the Manila Planetarium last February 12 in order to foster camaraderie at furtherance of the budding astronomy community here in the Philippines. With its objectives and mandate laid out, PUSO for Astronomy conducted a sidewalk astronomy at the Luneta Park later that evening.
In line with the theme “Emerging Space Technologies: A Jumpstart To Propel a Space Era”, UP Astronomical Society held a week-long exhibit at the National Institute of Physics, UP Diliman from Feb 13 to 19 featuring information about the History of the National Astronomy Week, as well as information regarding Philippine Astronomy, from our ancestors’ cosmologies up until the launching of Diwata-1 and the formation of the National Space Development Program along with a scale model of the Diwata-1 microsatellite.
We also had a free mobile planetarium show for students and the general public also at the National Institute of Physics, provided by the DOST-PAGASA.
On the final day of NAW 2017, UP AstroSoc held simultaneous events open for high school students and teachers. The following events are as follows:
Big Bang! an astronomy quiz show for high school students
Take Off! a rocket making competition for high school students
Parallax: a teachers’ workshop
The three major events mentioned were participated by hundreds of students and teachers all over Luzon. UP AstroSoc concluded its celebration of the National Astronomy Week upon awarding of certificates, tokens and the Grad Astral Cup.
For twenty-five years, the University of the Philippines Astronomical Society (UP AstroSoc) has been bringing together individuals interested in Astronomy and promoting Astronomy to the general public, especially the students. Together with fellow student organizations, it founded a network of astronomy-related student organizations called the Philippine Union of Student Organizations for Astronomy (PUSO for Astro) which is dedicated to contribute to the development of astronomy in the Philippines and is aimed towards the promotion of astronomy among the general public. PUSO for Astro serves as an exemplar of national cooperation among organizations across the country. Member organizations are as follows:
Ateneo League of Physicists
Bataan Peninsula State University Astronomical Society
De La Salle University Optical Society
Mindanao State University-Marawi Astronomical Society
Philippine Normal University Astronomical Society
Rizal Technological University Astronomy Society
University of Sto. Tomas Applied Physics Society
University of the Philippines Astronomical Society
University of the Philippines Baguio Astronomy Society
University of the Philippines Los Banos Astronomical Society
To kick-off the celebration of National Astronomy Week 2017, the PUSO for Astro had its official launching ceremony last February 12, 2017 at the Manila Planetarium where affiliated astronomical organizations across different parts of the country officially registered its membership to PUSO for Astro. Present in the launching ceremony are Ms. Kristine Jane Atienza and Mr. Kale Ashley Carurucan, two of the organization’s founders, as well as Mr. James Kevin Ty of the Astronomical League of the Philippines and Mr. Camilo Dacanay of the Philippine Astronomical Society.
This would not be possible if not for the organization’s founders and the undying support of its adviser Mr. Reuel Norman Marigza, Jr. and the National Museum Planetarium’s curator Ms. Ma. Belen Pabunan. Astronomy lectures and mobile planetarium shows were conducted in the afternoon by Mr. Gary Andreassen and Mr. Anthony Urbano of the Manila Street Astronomers, and Mr. Rizchel Masong of the DLSU Optics Society. This historic day in the astronomy community has been concluded with a free telescope viewing held in Rizal Park. With birth of PUSO for Astro comes not just an avenue to bring the cosmos closer to students and the general public but also a stronger unity. We are all under one sky; one astronomy community.
The registration for the Planetarium Show is now up. It is open and free for the general public. It would not be limited to only high school students or UP students but for everyone. Just present an ID at the entrance of the National Institute of Physics, UP Diliman.
However we only have limited slots so sign up here now!
From February 13-18, the UP Astronomical Society will be celebrating the National Astronomy Week 2017.
